One of the world's oldest travel companies, Thomas Cook UK, has entered liquidation on Sunday-night after an attempt to save the company failed.

As a result, all the airlines in the group in the UK, Spain and Scandinavia have ceased operations. The only exception is Condor Airlines, which is operating as normal.

To bring the stranded passengers home, the UK Civil Aviation Authority has launched Operation Matterhorn and is leasing in capacity from many airlines like Atlas Air, Malaysia Airlines, Miami Air, easyJet, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.

Thomas Cook was founded in 1841 and currently employed almost 22,000 people around the world. They had been posting large losses over the last few years and claim their difficulties came from Brexit uncertainty, the influence of low-cost airlines and customers booking their own holidays instead of holiday packages.

The airlines (not counting Condor) operated a fleet of 64 aircraft.
