Bulgarian Air Force commissioned in service third C-27J Spartan

On 31st March 2011 Bulgarian Air Force officially commissioned in service its third C-27J Spartan transport aircraft. The service number of the new aircraft is 073 and it is manufactured by the Italian company Alenia Aeronautica. This is the third and last transport aircraft of the type delivered to Bulgaria under the agreement between Bulgarian MOD and Alenia Aeronautica signed in the year 2006. According to the agreement the original number of transport aircraft ordered by Bulgaria was five. However due to the lack of funding Bulgarian MOD re-negotiated the number of aircraft in 2010 and finally they were reduced to three. In January 2011 the Bulgarian Committee on Export Control in the Ministry of Economy issued out the licenses for the import of the third transport aircraft into Bulgaria.

The official ceremony for commissioning in service of the aircraft took place in Vrazhdebna Air Base which is located near by the Bulgarian capital Sofia. The event was attended by many representatives of government institutions including Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, Minister of Defense Ret. Gen. Anyo Anguelov, Chief of Defense HQs Gen. Simeon Simeonov, Deputy Chief of Defense HQs Gen. Yordan Yordanov, Chief of Air Force HQs Gen. Konstantin Popov, Deputy Chief of Air Force HQs Gen. Rumen Radev, Italian Deputy Minister of Defence Giuseppe Cossiga, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Alenia North America Giuseppe Giordo, Italian Ambassador to Bulgaria Stefano Benazzo and others.

The C-27J aircraft was developed from Airitalia G.222 aircraft. The main particulars of C-27J aircraft are as follows: length 22,70 m, wingspan 28,70 m, height 9,64 m, wing area 82 sq. m, empty weight 17 000 kg, maximum takeoff weight 30 500 kg, maximum speed 602 km/h, cruising speed 583 km/h, range 4 260 km at 6 000 kg payload, service ceiling 9 144 m. The two Rolls Royce AE2100-D2A engines are capable of 4640 hp each. The capacity of the aircraft is 60 troops or 46 paratroops. The crew includes pilot, co-pilot and load-master (when needed).

The first C-27J transport aircraft was commissioned in service with the Bulgarian Air Force in the year 2007 and the second one in




2009.
