Switzerland is in a process of taking a decision for a new fighter for replacement of the old F-5E/F Tiger fighters, purchased in 1976 and 1981. The Government chose JAS-39 Gripen on the ground of the price but the deal should be approved by the Parliament. Rafale is still an option as Dassault sent to the Parliament a new price offer.
The delivery of the first new fighters is scheduled in 2015 and the Swiss Government may sell some of its F-5s. There already several candidates to buy them and Bulgaria might become one of them. This become clear during a presentation of a Swiss technology consortium RUAG held at Bulgarian MoD. The presentation was attended by representatives of Defence Investment Directorate and Bulgarian Air Force commanders as well by officials from Swiss Government, RUNG company and Israeli Elbit Systems. RUAG is one of the leading companies in the world that maintain F-5s from several Air Forces throughout the world. RUAG and Elbit Systems cooperate in modernization of F-5s.
